1.

Metal ores
Rocks containing metals or metal compounds from which it is economic to extract metals are called ores.

2.

Extracting metals from their ores involves three stages.

  • Mining and concentrating the ore.
  • Converting (reducing) the ore to the metal.
  • Purifying the metal.
3.

Converting (reducing) ores to metals

  • Metals higher in the reactivity series are more difficult to obtain from their ores than those lower down.

4.

The advantages and disadvantages of mining for metal ores

5.

Electrolysis and electrolytes

  • Electrolysis involves the decomposition of compounds by electrical energy.
  • The compound which is decomposed is called an electrolyte.
  • The electric current enters and leaves the electrolyte through terminals called electrodes.
  • The electrode connected to the positive of the battery is called the anode and the electrode connected to the negative of the battery is called the cathode.
