1.

Distance and displacement

  • Distance is the total path taken on a journey.
  • Displacement is the distance moved in a particular direction. For most journeys, the distance travelled will be greater than the displacement.
2.

Distance, speed and velocity

  • Speed is the distance moved in one second or one hour.
Speed is usually measured in metres per second (m/s) or kilometres per hour (km/hr).
  • Speed

  • Here is an equation triangle for speed, distance and time. This will help you to check the correct equations between these three variables.

Put your finger over one letter in the triangle to obtain the right equation.

  • Speed = the gradient of the distance–time graph.

3.

Acceleration

  • Acceleration is the change in speed per second.

  • Acceleration = the gradient of a speed–time graph.
